Sawm refers to fasting from dawn until sunset during the holy month of Ramadan.
It involves abstaining from food, drink, and marital relations, as well as heightened
self-restraint against negative behaviors like lying or arguing. Fasting is a rigorous
exercise in self-discipline, intended to cultivate Taqwa (God-consciousness). It allows
the believer to experience the pangs of hunger, fostering empathy for the less fortunate
and reminding the soul of its dependence on God.
The Qur’an defines the purpose of fasting clearly: "O you who have believed, decreed upon
you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous" (Qur’an 2:183).
Ramadan is also the month in which the Qur’an was first revealed, making it a period of deep spiritual
reflection and increased recitation of the holy text: "The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was
revealed the Qur'an..." (Qur’an 2:185).
The Hadith highlights the immense spiritual rewards of this pillar. The Prophet said, "Whoever fasts
Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven" (Sahih Bukhari).
He also noted that God says regarding the faster: "He leaves his food, drink, and desires for My sake.
Fasting is for Me, and I will reward it" (Sahih Muslim). Saum is thus a private act of worship that
strengthens the will and purifies the spirit.
